I graduated school today, my name is Bisirat, I’m 24 and just finished my medicine degree from the prestigious university of Ibadan on merits but that’s not the topic today 

You see the person dancing is my mom, the building you see is where I call home (it’s a face me I slap you condo in a place called idi-roko after maje) and those people on the floor are my neighbors. Of all of us in this hallway the happiest is my mum. 

All the days and nights of making and grinding corn to make ogi (pap) has paid off, all the nights of assault and insults at the bus park to sell koko paid off! The pain, the struggle. You see my dad, whose name they call Daddy Fatima, comes every Friday to drop eja kika (dried fish) and cowbell chocolate milk, his sole contribution to this family. 

Ha! Her only child is now a graduate, a medical doctor with a scholarship to do her master abroad! Eledami o ṣe (My God, thank you), she said as she danced and wept” 

Someone in the crowd shouted “iya ologi small small na, owo oniru owo oniyo”
“Iya Ologi rora majo oooo, fere fere lori ẹsẹ̀
And another said “iya ologi ti di iya dokita obodoyinbo”
